Spring is blowing fresh breezes and Easter is knocking softly on the door, heralding new beginnings and family ties. It is in this spirit that we, Beatrix and Edwin, welcome you to the cozy apartment Haus Sonnenterrasse in Fiss to immerse yourselves in the world of tradition and culinary delights. Celebrate the beauty of Easter with us as we introduce you to the art of baking a Tyrolean Easter plait – a culinary expedition that warms the heart and brings the family closer together.

What does the Easter plait symbolize in Tyrol?

In the peaceful atmosphere of our home, we honor the beauty and importance of old traditions that enrich our togetherness. At the heart of these cherished customs is the Easter plait, a bridge between the past and the present that passes on values and stories from generation to generation. This lovingly woven pastry is more than just a symbol of the Holy Trinity; it is an interweaving of deep religious values with the pure joy of celebrating together.

How do I prepare my delicious Easter plait?

The magic of ingredients:

To create this historic treat, you need:

  • 1 kg wheat flour (type 700, depending on the region)
  • 550 g lukewarm water
  • 150 g fine granulated sugar
  • 100 g soft butter
  • 10 g salt
  • 20 g fresh yeast (yeast)
  • 2 egg yolks
  • Grated zest of one organic orange
  • To top it off: an egg to brush & rye flour for dusting

Steps to the perfect Easter plait – the preparation:

The preparation of this Easter plait is a tribute to time and tradition. From the careful mixing of the ingredients to the moment the fragrant plait leaves the oven in golden brown splendor, every step is an act of love and dedication. We invite you to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors and create a piece of living history.

Preparation of the yeast dough:

  • Start with the butter, taking it out of the fridge early so that it softens. Then cut them into small cubes.
  • In a large bowl, mix the wheat flour with the warm water, sugar, butter cubes, salt, fresh yeast, egg yolks and grated orange zest.
  • Use a food processor to mix the ingredients at low speed for two minutes before blending at a higher setting for a further eight minutes until smooth.
  • Cover the dough with a clean cloth and leave it to rest at room temperature for about an hour so that it can rise.
  • Knead the dough briefly and then chill it for at least twelve hours, preferably overnight. This resting phase not only gives the dough the right consistency, but also a rich aroma.

Shaping and baking the Easter plait:

  • After the resting time, divide the dough into two halves, dust them lightly with flour and leave them to rest for another half an hour.
Divide each half into three equal pieces and roll them into strands.
  • On a lightly floured work surface, braid the strands into a loose plait. You can braid two plaits for a traditional Tyrolean Easter plait.
  • Carefully brush the plait with a beaten egg to give it a nice golden brown crust.
  • Leave the plait to rest for about ten minutes after coating before baking it in a preheated oven at 180 °C (fan oven 160 °C) for about 35 minutes until it is perfectly golden brown and baked through.
  • With these steps and a pinch of love and care, your Easter braid will not only be a feast for the senses, but also a symbol of coming together and joy.

We, Beatrix and Edwin from Appartement Haus Sonnenterrasse in Fiss, wish you lots of fun baking and a warm Easter get-together.
